Waking Among the Dead at Deathknell
A new Forsaken mage wakes in the crypt, learns who freed her, and cuts down the Mindless Ones before learning her first lesson in Arcane Intellect.
The Road
Deathknell was the first place I knew, and I knew it only as a shape in the midday gloom of Tirisfal Glades. I stopped a moment at Shadow Grave to take in the view, cold air in my hollow chest, before I went down the hill toward the chapel.
Battles
The northern part of the village was thick with the Mindless Ones, and I did not spare them. Before the day ended I had put down seven Mindless Zombies, three Wretched Zombies and one Rattlecage Skeleton. It was clumsy work at first, but my hands grew steadier with each one that fell. My skill with my staff and my guard against blows both sharpened a little as I fought.
Deeds
Undertaker Mordo gave me the first words I heard in this half-life: "About time you woke up." He said they had been ready to toss me into the fire with the others, but I had made it. He told me I was the Lich King's slave no more, and sent me to Shadow Priest Sarvis in the chapel at the base of the hill. That was my first task, Rude Awakening, and I finished it there.
Sarvis took my confusion in at a glance and tried to explain. We Forsaken were freed from the Lich King by Lady Sylvanas, the Dark Lady, and we now war against the Scourge and the humans who dog our steps. Then he gave me a new charge, The Mindless Ones. I was to destroy eight Mindless Zombies and eight Wretched Zombies, and he said to show them no mercy. The Fallen, he said, are nothing but the Lich King's slaves. The count is not yet full. I have seven of the first kind and three of the second.
Fellowship
I travelled alone today. Mordo and Sarvis spoke to me, and so did Isabella, the undead mage trainer, who greeted me plainly as a mage.
Growth
Somewhere in the fighting I felt new strength settle into me, and I knew I was stronger than when I woke. Afterward I went to Isabella, the undead mage trainer, and she taught me Arcane Intellect. My mind feels a little sharper for it.
