Waking Cold in Deathknell
A newly risen mage takes her first steps among the Forsaken, cuts down the Mindless Ones, and learns a spell from Isabella.
The Road
I came to myself in Shadow Grave and found my way into Deathknell, in the Tirisfal Glades. It was midday, though the light there felt thin and gray. I stopped a moment to take in the little village on its hill. It was the first place I had seen since waking.
Battles
The northern part of the village was crawling with the Mindless Ones, and I went at them with my magic. By day's end I had put down eleven foes: seven Mindless Zombies, three Wretched Zombies and a single Rattlecage Skeleton. My arms ached with a strange, cold weariness when it was done. I felt stronger for it too.
Deeds
Undertaker Mordo gave me the first words I heard in this new life. "About time you woke up," he said. They had been ready to toss me into the fire with the others. He told me I was the Lich King's slave no more, and sent me down the hill to Shadow Priest Sarvis in the chapel. Sarvis had a grim sort of kindness. He said I was another of the walking dead and must have had quite a shock. He told me we Forsaken had been freed by Lady Sylvanas, the Dark Lady, and that we are at war with the Scourge and with the humans who dog our steps. That finished the task Mordo had set me, Rude Awakening.
Sarvis then gave me a new one, The Mindless Ones. The northern village is overrun, and he wants eight Mindless Zombies and eight Wretched Zombies destroyed. He asked for no mercy, since the Fallen are only the Lich King's slaves. I have begun and am not yet done. I have killed seven of the first kind and three of the second.
Growth
Partway through the fighting I felt new strength settle into me, a quiet widening of my power. Afterward I met Isabella, who trains mages among the Undead. She taught me Arcane Intellect. My guarding and my handling of a staff both improved a little through the day's blows.
